TATTS-IT

Synopsis: -“Hallucination bereavement or a ghost? When reality breaks the mould.”

Tatts It is a development experimental film by Creative Movies to deal with intense grief. It is a story that deals with the serious issue of bereavement hallucination, where a person sees images of a departed loved one. What to the protagonist, Ashoke, is his continuing ‘normal’ family live, is to the rest of the world, evidence of his losing touch with reality. The film light-hearted introduces the antagonist, Sumit, who is convinced what Ashoke is actually seeing is a ghost and seeks to profit from this situation. A confrontation occurs and this forces Ashoke to realise the vision of his partner might not be real. This psychologically breaks the cycle of the bereavement hallucination, and, down to earth, he is faced with the sad reality he is now alone. But the film leads the audience through this transformation gently and the perceptive viewer cannot help but smile. As a twist the film leaves the audience with a teasing question. What have they seen that is really real?

Director’s notes –

The idea of the film was to tell a story of a person experiencing bereavement hallucinations and challenged by a scheming friend who insisted the vision was just of a ghost. We wanted to create a film that dealt with serious tragic content in an entertaining way. This film was also a test case for the choreography which would be used in a planned larger ‘Ghost’ story film. The challenge was to film the protagonist Point-of-View (POV). He would see and talk to an ‘image’ of his deceased wife sitting in a chair. His friend, filmed with normal camera angles, would see that the chair was empty, as would the watching audience. For the actors, the challenge was emotionality created by reaction, and they had to ‘break the fourth wall of film’ – directly addressing the camera. Originally the plan was to shoot the whole film POV for both actors. The female role would not be POV as she was a hallucination. An initial shot rehearsal exposed the restricted choreography. The short film did not give us the luxury of developing the storyline so the audience would have time to realise the actor POV interaction.E
